Ephesians 6

November 17, 2019

Main Idea: God designed Parents to be the primary disciple-makers so their children would love God, love others and make disciples.

Jesus’ Model:

Mark 3:13-15 - “He called (them to) …be with him…”

John 1:39 - He said… ‘Come and you will see.’”

Matthew 4:19 - “Jesus said, ‘Come, follow me, andI will send you out to fish for people.’”

I. Children Obey Your Parents. (Ephesians 6:1)

Téknon (Child) – A child; or a person living in dependence on God, parents or spiritual parents.

Hupakouó (Obey)- Eagerly listen, follow, and obey.

“In the Lord, for this is Right” - Only what the Lord says and what pleases the Lord.

We Help “Children” Obey:

1. Praying for a changed heart.

Ezekiel 36:26 - “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone…”

2. Modeling obedience.

Matthew 8:9 - “For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to …my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

3. Providing increasing responsibilities.

Luke 16:10 – “Jesus said, ‘Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…’”

4. Teaching obedience is its own reward.

John 15:10-11 - “Jesus said, …These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.’”

II. Children Honor Your Parents.(Ephesians 6:2-3)

Tim-ah'-o (Honor) -Value, admire, prize and appreciate.

III. Parents Don’t Provoke Your Children.  (Ephesians 6:4a)

IV. Parents Discipline and Disciple Your Children. (Ephesians 6:4)

Truths to Teach: Ephesians 5

1. Be loving.(Ephesians 5:1-2)

Love glorifies God and is passionate for other’s eternal good.

2. Be sexually pleasing to God.  (Ephesians5:3)

Sexuality is a gift from God and meant to be fully enjoyed as God designed.

3. Be Christ-like with our speech. (Ephesians 5:4)

Our speech is to reflect Christ and open doors for Gospel conversations.

4. Be wise with choices. (Ephesians 5:15-17)

Choices reflect our desires and determine our freedom.

5. Be filled with God’s Spirit.   (Ephesians5:18-21)

Surrendering ourselves to be led by the Spirit gives us the desire and ability to live out God’s will.
