I. Sanctification is our identity and a process.
     1. Identity

1 Corinthians 6:11 – “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

      2. Process

By God’s Work

2 Corinthians 3:18 – “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

By Man’s Work

Romans 8:13 – “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

II. Romans 6:1-11 Observations
     1. Baptism is about identity. (vs. 3)
     2. Our identity calls us to walk in the newness of life. (vs. 4

Genesis 1:27 – “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Romans 8:29 – “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

     3. Our identity reminds us we are free in Christ. (vs. 6-7)
     4. Our identity gives us an eternal mindset. (vs. 8)

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 – “17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

     5. Our identity is that we are dead to sin, and alive to God in
         Christ. (vs. 11)

III. How do we remind each other of our identity in Christ?
     1. View yourself correctly.
     2. Meet in community regularly.

Proverbs 11:14 – “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

     3. Get involved in an encouraging accountability group.

James 5:16 – “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

Proverbs 28:13 – “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

Romans 1:11-12 – “11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.”
