The Promise of Hope: False Hope Versus True Hope

Isaiah 1

December 1, 2019

I. Children Rebelling against Their Father. (Isaiah 1:1-15)

Like Sodom and Gomorrah:

Genesis 13:13 - “Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.”

Genesis 18:20-21 - “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see...”

Genesis 18:32 – “The Lord said (To Abraham), ‘For the sake of ten (righteous people), I will not destroy (Sodom and Gomorrah)’”

Genesis 19:5 - “The (men) called to Lot, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.’”       

Genesis 19:9 - “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them”         

Ezekiel 16:49 – “Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: …pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.” 

II. The Father Promises Hope Through Jesus Christ. (Isaiah 1:9-20)

Jesus Christ:

1. Is God with us. (Isaiah 7:14) 

2. Is the better King. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

3. Brings us His peace. (Isaiah 11:10)

4. Gives us the Holy Spirit.(Isaiah 35:5-7)  

5. Removes our sin, gives resurrection life and prays for us. (Isaiah 53:5, 8-12)  

6. Gives us true freedom. (Isaiah 61:1) 

7. Gives us the new heaven and new earth. (Isaiah 65:17-19)

Hebrews 6:17-18 - “…God guaranteed His promise with an oath… that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.”

2. What is one of your favorite promises of God?

3. What are some of the ways that sin disrupts our hope?

4. How would you explain to a neighbor or loved one how religious performance or trying is a false hope?

5. How hopeful are you in general?

6. Pray to walk in God’s promises and hope. (Hebrews 6:17-18)
