Delighting in the Law of the Lord

Psalm 1:2-3 says, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”

If we want to grow in Christ and have a fruitful life, it is essential to delight in the Lord and his Word.

How do we know if we are delighting in the law of the Lord? Think of anything else that we delight in, like a good movie. When we delight in a good movie, we have multiple responses that should be similar to delighting in the Word.

  1. We spend time. We might see the movie again. We will think about it during our day. We might even spend time in line waiting to get into the movie.
  2. We tell others. If we delighted in the movie, we want others to delight in it as well. We will praise the movie to others, trying to give them the same opportunity for delight that we had.
  3. We sing. Most good movies have a great soundtrack, and will leave us humming or even singing the tunes long after the movie is over.

The Word of God is much better than any movie. The time we spend reading, praying, and meditating on the Word should be longer than our movie time. If our time dwelling in the Word is lacking, our delight is probably lacking.

The story of the Bible surpasses any movie by far, and the best part is that we are a part of it. If we are not telling others about it, we are probably not delighting in it.

Scripture has inspired more songs than anything else in history. If we are not enjoying the praise of God through song, we are probably not delighting in the law of the Lord.

Pray that God gives you delight in Him and his Word. Delight is the key to a fruitful life in Him.
