Freedom: God’s Jealousy and Our Freedom

Exodus 33 and 34

5-31-20

 

 

Sinful Jealousy - Unloving desire to have something that God has given to someone else.

Proverbs 14:30 – “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.” 

Proverbs 27:4 – “Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?”

1 Corinthians 3:3 – “For you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?”

 

 

Godly Jealousy- A passion to fully love and also fight for something valuable. 

Exodus 20:5 – “You shall not worship the (Idols) or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”

Deuteronomy 32:16 – “They made Him jealous with strange gods; With abominations they provoked Him to anger.” 

2 Corinthians 11:2 – “For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.”

 

Godly jealousy includes:

  1. Passionate Love. (Exodus 34:10, 33:12) 

John Donne - “Take me to you, imprison me, (unless) You enthrall me, I shall never be free, nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.” 

  1. Priority of relationship. (Exodus 34:11-14)
  2. Persistent faithfulness. (Exodus 34:15-16, 33:15-16)

 

Joshua 24:19 – “Then Joshua said to the people, ‘You will not be able to serve the Lord, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God…’”

Pray – “Father, I want to know Your jealous love for me.”

“I ask for ______________ to experience Your jealous love.”

 

 

Monthly Transformation Verse: John 8:36 - “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Weekly Transformation Verse: 1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
