Jonah: Experiencing The LORD’s Grace in His Discipline
Jonah 1:17-2:1-10
Those who have received God’s grace also receive a calling to give it away.
Hebrews 11:6 - “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”
Acts 20:24 - “I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify of the gospel of the grace of God.”
1. The LORD graciously corrects us. (1:17-2:3)
Hebrews 12:6-8 - “…those whom the Lord loves He disciplines… God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined…then you are illegitimate children and not true sons."
Hebrews 12:3 - "Consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart."
2. The LORD graciously convicts and convinces us of the value of
repentance. (2:2-6)
2 Timothy 2:25 – “With gentleness correct those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth.”
Grant (didómi) - Impart, place into, freely give
Luke 15:17-29
When he came to his senses….
He said, I am dying here…
I will go…and say to him…
….Father, I have sinned …
I am not worthy to be called your son…
3. The LORD graciously cleanses us of idols and begins to change us into
mature sons and daughters. (2:4-9)
4. The LORD’s children are to be known for gratitude, obedience, and
praise. (2:9)
Faith Sheet
Transformation Verse - “…Salvation is from the LORD.” Jonah 2:9
Main Themes:
~ The LORD’s grace in disciplining us is because we are His and He wants us to be Christ-like. If we were not His, He would hand us over completely to our sin. (Hebrews 12:4-12, Romans 8:39, 1:18-32)
~ “Salvation is of the Lord” is one of the great proclamations of the Bible. God saves us because He freely loves us. Hosea 14:4 - “I will heal their apostasy, I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from them.”
