Chapter 3: Taking God at His Word, Kevin DeYoung

Have you ever wished for a sign from God so you would know for sure how God is leading you?

Ever wish you could hear God’s audible voice to know what to do?

Ever felt like the Bible is just not enough?

Sufficiency – God’s word has everything we need for salvation and godly living.

2 Timothy 3:15-17 – “… from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

Clarity – God’s word can be clearly understood by the masses.

Psalms 119:130 – “The unfolding of Your words gives light and understanding to the simple.”

Authority – God’s word is true, complete, and the final source of authority.

Matthew 4:4 – “But Jesus answered, ‘It is written, Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”

Necessity – God’s word is essential for knowing Him and for living in the truth.

2 Peter 1:3 – “Seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”

     4. Visions are “waking dreams”.

III. In these last days God has spoken to us through His Son.

2 Corinthians 1:20 – “For all the promises of God find their yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”

     1. He is the Heir of everything.
     2. He is the Creator of everything.
     3.
He is the full revelation of God.
     4.
He is the Sustainer of everything.
     5.
He made purification for our sins.
     6.
His atoning work is complete.

 #1- Reviewing This Past Sunday
Maturing in Christ: God’s Word is Sufficient
Hebrews 1:1-4

1. Read Hebrews 1:1-4 and discuss with someone.
2. Have you ever felt like the Bible was not enough and you
needed a miracle, sign, and/or audible voice? What does that
say about our view of God’s word?  Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17
and 2 Peter 1:1-4. In what specific ways does God say His word
is sufficient for us in knowing Him and living out our daily lives?
3. Jesus is the Living Word and the Bible is the written word.
Though they are distinct, they are inseparable. Read John 5:39
and praise God for revealing Himself through His Son.

# 2- Preparing for Next Sunday
Maturing in Christ: God’s Word is Clear
Deuteronomy 30:11-17

1. Read Deuteronomy 30:11-17.
2. What does vs. 11 reveal about the Bible?
3. What are vs. 12-13 communicating to us about God’s word?
4. What does vs. 14 reveal about God’s written word?
5. How understandable does God say His word is in vs. 15-17?
6. Since the Scriptures are clear enough to understand and obey,
why do so many say they cannot understand God’s word? (See
    Romans 1:18-20, 1 Corinthians 1:18, and John 3:19-20)
7. Pray for anyone you know who needs to hear and receive the
    Gospel.
