God Delivers: Atonement Sacrifices – Part 1

Leviticus 1:1-9

“Atonement” -(kipur) means ‘to fully cover’ and proclaims through redemption we are at one with God.

I. Removes Our Guilt (Leviticus 1:1-4)

 ~ Burnt offering - Voluntary offering was completely consumed and ­­symbolized a forgiven and renewed walk with the LORD.

Hebrews 9:9   “… both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience…”

II. Restores us to Ministry (Leviticus 2:1-3)   

~ Grain offering- Voluntarily thanking God for daily needs and dedicating oneself to Worship and Service.    

Ephesians 2:8-10 - “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—  not from works, so that no one can boast.  For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.”

1 Peter 2:11-12 - “Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. Keep your behavior excellent among the [Unbelieving], so that …(they will) glorify God in the day of visitation.”  

John 12:23-24 - “Jesus answered them, saying, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified…. I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.’”

III. Reconciles us to be at Peace with God (Leviticus 3:1-5)

~Peace offering – Voluntary offering was eaten by the offerer, priest and others, and symbolized a satisfying, peaceful walk with God.

John 14:27 – “Jesus said, ‘…my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’”

Leviticus 4:20; 17:11

John 6:53-55 - “…I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.”

2. Why was the offerer of a sacrifice in the Old Testament supposed to identify with the animal (by laying his hand on the head)?   (Hebrews 11:6)

3. What did the cost of the offerings communicate about the seriousness of sin and the worth of Jesus?

4. What is the difference between doing something from a sense of duty or from a sense of delight?

5. What is the connection between our gratitude for our salvation and our calling to service?

6. In what ways is Christ’s sacrifice better than the Israelites’ burnt offerings?(Hebrews 9:12, 10:8-25)

7. Why is it important not only to see atonement as covering our sin but also restoring us to a right relationship with God?

Leviticus 5: 1-19

 1. Read Leviticus 5:1-19 and ask the Lord to reveal Himself and His truth.

2. HIGHLIGHT a verse or truth that stands out to you and write it out.

3. EXPLAIN the text in your own words to make sure you see the big picture of God’s Story.

4. APPLY a truth from the text to your own life. (Focus on what God is saying to you? What is your act of obedience, confession, prayer, praise, giving thanks?)

5. RESPOND in prayer (use Scriptures as a prayer guide) and apply what God reveals to you.
