Promised Land: Private Sin and Hurting Others

Joshua 7:1-26

I.  How does our private sin hurt others? Joshua 7:1-26

1.  Produces separation and hiding.

Genesis 3:7-8 - “…they knew that they were naked…they sewed fig leaves together…they hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees…”

2.  Distorts how we see and treat people.

Matthew 5:28 - “Jesus said…everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

3.  Erodes character and ministry.

Galatians 6:7-8 - “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked…  whatever a man sows, he will reap… sowing to his flesh will reap corruption…sowing to the Spirit will reap eternal life.”

4.  Hinders healing in our lives and relationships.

James 5:16 “…confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed…”

5.  Prevents our prayers from being answered.

1 Peter 3:7 - “Husbands… show your wife honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.”

II.  What happens when we reject our private sin and walk in the truth?   Joshua 8:1-2

  • We fully live out our identity and purpose.

1 Peter 2:5 - “You also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
