Church on Mission: “Spirit-led Evangelism”

Acts 8:26-40

I. The hopelessness of the lost.

II. The mission of God. 

Genesis 12:1-3 - “Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your countryand your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.  And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’”

Galatians 3:8 - “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached   the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.’” 

John 3:17 -^“ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

Luke 19:10 - “Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost.”

John 17:18 - “As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Luke 10:2 - “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

John 3:8 - “The windblows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

III. The obedience of the believer.

1. Be obedient to the Spirit’s leading.

In reality, much of Christian witness inspired by Spirit-led boldness begins with a decision to be obedient to the call to witness. If we take that first step of obedience, the Spirit will guide us and equip us with boldness. We often miss out on opportunities to witness simply because we do not take the first step to turn a conversation into a witnessing situation. -NIVAC

2. Start with a question.

3. Listen to their response.

4. Share the Scripture.

Mark 4:14, 20 - “The sower sows the word...those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”

Romans 10:17 - “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ.”

5. Point them to Jesus.

6. Aim for a response.

Discussion Questions for the Week

1. How have you witnessed people looking for hope and meaning in all the wrong places? What would you tell them?

2. What are some ways you’ve been surprised by how God has led you, your church, or your friends to be on mission?

3. How can we cultivate a heart willing to respond obediently to the Spirit’s leading, no matter the risks?

4. How has asking questions and careful listening helped you in sharing the gospel?

5. What are some reasons we might feel intimidated to try and explain the Scriptures to an unbeliever?

6. Why is pointing people to Jesus and calling for a response vital when sharing the gospel with others? Read Acts 4:12 and Romans 10:9-10.
