I.  For Starters:

1. Tell the best fishing story you ever heard or describe your best memory fishing.

2. How is fishing for men like regular fishing and how is it different?

3. What characteristics does a person have to have for you to follow Him or her?

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 5:1-11 out loud as a group. What is the main point of the passage?
  2. Describe the setting in which Jesus is preaching. (1)
  3. Why were the people crowding around Jesus? (Back to 4:40-41)
  4. What were the fishermen doing as he was preaching? (2)
  5. Jesus was very aware of His circumstances, what did Jesus do in order to be better heard and what does that mean for us who want to communicate the Gospel? (2-3)
  6. Whose boat did He choose and why is this significant? (3)
  7. Jesus turned a fishing boat into a pulpit. What does this tell us about our daily lives and opportunities?
  8. What is humanly “wrong” with Jesus command? (4-5)
  9. How did Peter view Jesus’ command at first? (5)
  10. How would you describe what happened that day simply because Peter obeyed the Lord (6)
  11. Notice the miracle spilled out from Peter to others. What does this say about our obedience at home, work, church gatherings etc? (7)
  12. Describe what happened to Peter. (8)
  13. A person who did not get a heart change that day might have calculated how much money the catch would bring, or might have told others about the fish story, but would not have seen their sinfulness and God’s holiness. What happened to Peter that made him want to throw it all overboard and follow Jesus? (Acts 16:14)
  14. Who were Peter’s partners that day? (10)
  15. What did Jesus do “for” them and what did He now “call” them to be about? (10)
  16. What all does vs. 11 mean for the disciples and their families?

 III. Growing Deeper 

  1. Review Sunday’s message with someone.
  2. What would it take for you to “throw everything overboard” for the Lord?
  3. Are all believers supposed to “throw everything overboard”, why or why not?
  4. How does a believer become an effective fisherman of men?
  5. Peter’s faith got tested because the Lord called Him to go against common sense. When have you lately been tested like that and what was the outcome?
  6. Pray for one another to throw overboard whatever is needed in order to follow Christ.
