The Gospel of Deliverance

 Part 2

Luke 4:14-30

I.          Doing God’s work, God’s way, brings God’s results.

II.        Jesus came to redeem:

1. Spiritually poor

Jesus said, “ Because you say,  I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing, and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.”       Revelation 3:17

2. Spiritually enslaved

"This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.”         John 3:19

3. Spiritually blind

4. Spiritually oppressed

III.       The essentials for salvation:

  1. Pray for the Spirit’s work of grace

"…I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I  will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes….                     Ezekiel 36:26-27

  1. Proclaim the Gospel truth

    3.   Ask for & cultivate faith in Christ alone

Questions for this week:

I.  For Starters:

  1. If someone said to you that there is “too much need in this world and it is so overwhelming” – what would be your response?
  2. How would you describe your prayer for the lost and why is it the way you described? (examples-daily, strong, anemic, haphazard)

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 4:            1-30
  2. In what specific ways does this passage reveal how Jesus felt about worshipping with God’s people?
  3. At first, how did the people in the Synagogue respond to Jesus' teaching? (20-22)
  4. During this event, in what ways did Jesus demonstrate the importance of knowing the promises of the Father from Scripture? (23-24)
  5. What did Jesus say about the passage He read from Isaiah and why is this Scripture so important to the Jewish people? (21)
  6. Why do you think the people had such difficulty in accepting Jesus' words? (22)
  7. Have you experienced the truth of verses 23-27 that a prophet is not always very welcome in his home town and if so, how did you respond to not being welcomed?
  8. Why were the people so angry with what Jesus said? (23-29)
  9. To what degree were they angry and what does this say about all who walk in Jesus’ footsteps? (28-29)  See John 15:20
  10. What kind of reception should we expect when we speak the truth?
  11. How does this section of Scripture reveal that our Lord does not favor one culture over another?

III. Growing deeper

  1. 1.         Review Sunday’s message with someone.
  2. Read 2 Thessalonians 1:7–8 and see why Jesus was willing to be rejected and misunderstood.
  3. 3.        Pray for one another and for one person in need of Christ or His compassion. Ask God what He would have you do.

Here is a guide to use in praying for others. These statements are found on our LTG cards.

  • Lord, I pray that you draw _______to yourself.             (John 6:44)
  • I pray that _________ hear and believe the Word of God for what it really is.                                                    (1 Thessalonians 2:13)
  • Lord, prevent Satan from blinding ________ to the truth.                        (2 Timothy 2:25-26)
  • I ask that You send someone who will share the gospel with _______.(Matthew 9:37-38)
  • I also ask that you give me the opportunity, the courage and the right words to share the truth with________.          (Colossians 4:3-6)
  • Lord, I pray that __________ confess Christ as Lord, take root and grow in faith and bear much fruit in Your glory.              (Colossians 2:6-7)
