That Injures or Blesses

Luke 10:38-42

I. Ministry that Injures:

1. Ministry based on our flesh & not His Spirit.

Flesh (sarx) –The corrupt part of us that is hostile to God’s control & that seeks to fulfill our sinful desires.

Romans 8:5-8 -For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so & those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Galatians 5:16-17- …walk by the Spirit & you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. …the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, & the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 

2. Working “for God” while not abiding in God.

  • Bothered
  • Worried        
  • Overly busy
  • Parched
  • Hurtful

3. Joyless ministry paints an unattractive picture.

Hebrews 13:17 -  Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy…

2 Corinthians 1:24  -…we are workers with you for your joy…

James 1:2-4   Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials…so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Titus 2:10  …tell slaves to show their masters how good and completely loyal they can be. Then they will show the beauty of the teachings about God our Savior in everything they do.

II. Ministry that Blesses:
  (Glory of God & the Good of others)

1. Ministry that comes from being filled with His Spirit.

Zechariah 4:6 - "…'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the Lord of hosts.

~“Might” & “Power”- Strength, human skill, ingenuity, effort

Ephesians 5:18 - …be filled with the Spirit

2. Ministry that comes from Knowing Him, Treasuring Him & Desiring to Make Him known.
