Why was Jesus baptized….

  1. Jesus was baptized to show He trusts the Father
  2. Jesus was baptized so the Father could honor Him
  3. Jesus was baptized to show that He is our brother

I.  For Starters:

  1. Other than now, what period of history would you like to live and why?
  2. What was your baptism like?
  3. What would you like to most hear from God now? When you finish this life?

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 3:21-38.
  2. In what specific ways does Luke show us the Trinity was involved in this baptism? Vs 21-22
  3. What did the Father want Jesus to know? Why?
  4. When did Jesus start His ministry and how old was he? Vs. 23
  5. How could the genealogy be named Jesus’ genealogy even though He was from heaven?
  6. Why did Luke trace Jesus’ genealogy back to Adam?

III. Growing deeper

  1. Review Sunday’s message with someone.
  2. Luke intentionally compares the first Adam with the second Adam. How are they different?  1 Corinthians 15:47–49
  3. Read the following Scriptures and see how important prayer was to Jesus and discuss your own prayer life. Luke 5:16, 6:12, 9:18,  9:28, 22:41 and 23:34.  What does your prayer life reveal about you? How could your prayer life improve? What are you doing well in your prayer life?
  4. Now read Luke 11:13. What is the greatest answer to prayer?
  5. Why should we refrain from baptizing infants? Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 2:41 and 8:12?
  6. The Spirit came upon Jesus like a dove. Read Matthew 10:16, Isaiah 42:1–4 and Luke 2:24. What do you learn about doves that reflect what is being revealed about Jesus?
  7. Pray for one another.
