I. The Old Testament Law was “given” to the nation of Israel, _______________.
1 Corinthians 10:11 - Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
Difference between “to us” & “for us”.
II. The Old Testament Law, although a whole unit, can be seen as having three _____________. (Human construct)
1. Civil Law – Moral instruction and guidelines as well as cultural responsibilities to be different than the nations and function morally as a nation. (Treat people, restitution, court issues etc.)
Exodus 21:12-36 Page #79
2. Ceremonial Law – Relate to God in worship and be distinguished in lifestyle from the other nations. These ceremonies point to the reality of the Messiah. (Temple worship, sacrifices, feasts, circumcision, dietary and clothing regulations, etc.)
3. Moral Law – Relates to justice and judgment. Reveals God’s Holy nature. Includes the Ten Commandments and penalties for failure to obey the Moral Law. The Law sets up the need for a Messiah and reveals our fallen nature and hopelessness.
The Old Testament saint was saved by seeing himself as he is and God as He is and calling out for grace that leads to repentance, faith and a new nature.
Isaiah 45:22 – Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other.
III. The Old Testament Law/demands are fulfilled totally in ______________________.
